Who’s Who in Green: Rachel McAdams
April 17, 2009 · Print This Article
Yes – that Rachel McAdams. The charismatic actress with the contagious smile, who won the hearts of the world with her role in sobfest The Notebook. But, acting isn’t McAdams’ only passion. She’s an environmentalist, too, and even has her own green blog – Green is Sexy.
When McAdams isn’t filming a movie, she’s most likely in her native Canada living a simple, green life that’s not so far away from the way the rest of us treehuggers live. She’s doing a green remodel on the Toronto home she purchased, and doesn’t own a car – she rides her bike all over town.
In 2007, McAdams started the blog ‘Green is Sexy’ with two of her friends, Megan and Didi. From her profile on the blog:
Rachel’s love for the planet began at a young age – summers spent at the cottage, swimming in the Great Canadian Lakes , riding her banana seat bike around the neighborhood. Winters consisted of tobogganing through the treacherous woods and building dangerous snow forts. Today, her bike is still her vehicle of choice and she isn’t above the occasional snow fort. But she’s trying to lighten her footprint on the earth – supporting tree planting organizations, switching her house to green power and developing an OCD for unplugging anything with a plug. She dreams of one day living in a treehouse and being able to grow her own food.
Green is Sexy offers tips, shopping recommendations, links to the girls’ favorite sites and – our favorite – postcards from their travels around the world, in which Rachel discusses Paris reusing its trash can liners and the fantastic local, organic food in Spain.
Rachel is a refreshing reminder that celebrities can be down to earth, too – and that, of course, green is sexy. She even wants to raise her family on a farm one day, as she told Marie Claire magazine in a recent issue:
“I would give it a good shot for a while,” she said. “I grew up in a small town, with a small backyard and raspberry bushes. My parents had a garden, but it was very basic. I think one thing that kids who grow up on farms really have going for them is they have exposure to death and birth in a totally different way. I think it takes away a little but of the mystery and a little but of the fear, and I do wish I had that.”
Now this is one celebrity role model that kids across the world can really look up to. Keep it up, Rachel!
