Oil and its related use has been one of the large contibuting factors in global warming. Global warming is melting the polar ice caps, which will result in misery for human kind. And how do many respond to this melting ice? They are happy! Now they can drill for MORE oil where the ice used to be! This is lunacy. I do not fault average people for wanting cheaper fuel and lower prices for food, etc., but we should all strive to use oil and gas less. Many have done this since oil prices sky-rocketed. I DO fault the oil industry for raking in billions in profit and governments for not doing more to make alternatives to oil viable. The planet belongs to all of us, yet we have entrusted its care to "experts", many of whom care only about profit or political benefit. These jackasses would sell their own mothers if there was a buck and a vote in it somewhere for them. If they won't change their habits now, they or their successors surely will when civil revolts escalate in response to harsh climate changes and famine. We think we're having a bad time now because gas prices are high? Just you wait....

Carl, not everyone lives within walking distance of food/jobs/public transportation. $12/gallon gas won't be so bad once we have time to react as a nation (i.e. cars get 100+ MPG), but if it comes too fast we're all going to get fucked, you included Carl. $12/gallon gas, too fast, means oranges cost $5/each, loaves of bread $20/per. $12/gallon gas means industry shuts down, people lose jobs, and schools can't get kids to class in buses.

If you can't live with gas at $12/gal, then you don't deserve to live. Find some other lifestyle, hog.

...your article is alarmist at best. Wanting to go and drill for oil in possibly the largest oil concentration in the world is not about GREED as you put it but it is about lowering prices of oil. We currently have need of oil and gas - ethanol is not as great as it is cracked up to be bc it raises food prices and is not environmentally clean. I CANNOT LIVE WITH GAS AT $12/GAL WHICH IS WHAT THEY ARE PREDICTING. This ICE CAP is not going to disappear.

Fantastic article and well said! At the end of the article, you state what most of us eco-minded people are thinking. The melting of the arctic ice DOES seem like a test for humanity. We DO have neon lights flashing at us saying, "STOP POLLUTING!"

I feel like we are actors in a movie and we are at the cliff hanger part, where if we do the right thing, we can survive....if not, we are all doomed. We just can't get ourselves to slow down, and we ARE living in a dream state like the 'Matrix'. There are sooo many people out there still sooo unconscious! Life has been too easy for us and we are going to get wiped out because we don't have the ability to adapt now. Unbelievable and devastating that the superpowers are hungry for artic land just to tap into more oil! All I have to say about that is "What Dumbasses!" Don't they have kids? Don't they care what they are causing and leaving for their kids? Ahhhhh!

Now, I feel like I have to go out and by hydroponic pots and lights to grow food indoors (if there is possibility of massive famine due to dramatic weather changes). How else are we going to get our food? I refuse to eat my cat or my family like the Donner party.
