Greening Up War: A Round Table Discussion on Environmentally Friendly Killin’
April 29, 2008
The Onion nails it just right- if we’re going to torture, wage war, and ethnically cleanse, it should be in a environmentally friendly way.
H/T to the big guy Jordan for dropping this link on me.
Did You Celebrate ‘Fuck the Earth Day’ on the 23rd?
April 27, 2008
Kevin Nealon and Jack English have teamed up to produce an awesome video that tells you to ignore what the hippie alarmists are saying about the earth. They’ve pronounced April 23rd ‘Fuck the Earth Day’, and celebrated it by burying styrofoam in the ground, among other great faux planet killing acts.
From the video:
“I’m Jack English and I paid for this ad to tell you about a new and better holiday: April 23rd, Fuck the Earth Day! In the past several years, the Bush Administration has cast a lot of good doubt on liberal media myths like deforestation and global warming, and as a true patriotic American, I blindly follow what my wise elector leaders tell me to.”

Because You Can Train Bears to Do Just About Anything: The Hockey Edition
April 10, 2008
Great FSM! This video of a bear playing hockey disturbs me on a deep level. That thing would be a monster in a hockey fight.
Bears belong in forests.

Al Gore on 60 Minutes: Dick Cheney and Other Global Warming Deniers Are Flat Worlders
April 4, 2008
Or maybe it was more like:
“You’re talking about Dick Cheney. I think that those people are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view, they’re almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat,” says Gore. “That demeans them a little bit, but it’s not that far off…”
Have a look at what the former Vice Prez and current “PR Agent for The Planet” has to say about his Halliburton-hugging successor during his March 30th 60 Minutes interview on CBS.

Guess What I’ve Done? I Invented a Light That Plugs Into the Sun
March 31, 2008
I found this one via my buddy Hank Green.
Wouldn’t it be cool if we all changed our light bulbs to energy saving ones?
A compact fluorescent light bulb uses 1/4 of the electricity and lasts 10 times longer than standard light bulbs. Something everyone can do to help reduce the amount of C02 emissions.

As The Boos Rained Down: President Bush Throws Out First Pitch in Green(er) Stadium
March 30, 2008
Michael recently reported that President Bush would throw out the first pitch in the Washington Nationals new green(er) stadium. Here’s video of him running out to a cascade of boos, quickly throwing his pitch (a good one for a throw-out pitch, I’ll give him that), and then retreating to the tunnels.
Our country does like this President.

Great Jebus’s Ghost! Video- An Elepant Freakin’ Painting a Picture of Herself
March 28, 2008
Wow, this is one of the most amazing things I’ve seen in a long time. You have to watch this video of an elephant painting a picture of himself. So. Very. Amazing.
I couldn’t help it tearing up at the end. Wow.
Video Shows Growth of Wal-Mart Matches Outbreak of Infectious Disease
March 25, 2008

This is awesome- Kiwi Tobes has a downright creepy video showing the growth of Wal-Mart since its founding. I’d be willing to lay a tenner down on the table betting that the growth of Wal-Mart is similar to the outbreak pattern of an infectious disease released from Bentonville- think Stephen Kings The Stand here.
It’s pretty damn clever how the video was put together. Here’s what Kiki Tobes says:
Freebase has a topic for every zip code, along with it’s longitude and latitude. Here’s one example. One query pulls out all the ZIP codes along with their longitudes and latitudes. You can turn longitudes and latitudes into graphical coordinates with some simple transformations (which will vary based on the region you’re plotting and how big your image is) — here are the ones I used:
x=(longitude+127)*16
y=(50-latitude)*20If you plot all the ZIP codes using a library like PIL, you get a nice map with dots that roughly match population density, which has the advantage of looking a little bit like a night-time satellite photo of the United States.
Freebase also contains a list of Wal-mart locations, along with their addresses and the year that they opened. Here’s an example. One query pulls all of these out of Freebase.
To create the animation, I generated 30 images for each year starting with 1962. I spread all the Wal-marts that opened that year over the 30 frames. To show the appearance of a Wal-mart, all I had to do was plot a large white dot over the small yellow dot for the appropriate ZIP code. I turned the 1380 images into an animation using MEncoder.
Here’s a version I found on YouTube, but I like the one on Kiki Tobes much better. There’s something about seeing it spread out into the black and slowly trace the outline of the country, as if the ocean is the only thing holding its hungry growth back. Click over and watch the Kiki Tobes version, it’s worth the minute it’ll cost you.

Weeds Season Three Coming Out in Green (Legal) DVD Packaging
March 19, 2008
I think it’s awesome that the first DVD Indie film studio Lionsgate is releasing in their new ‘green’ disc packaging is the third season of Weeds. If any show deserves to be in feel-good green packaging it’s Weeds. I love Nancy Botwin.
The trays on all environmentally-friendly DVDs from Lionsgate will be made of 100 percent recycled materials (it’ll take about 500,000 used water bottles to make them) and each tray can be recycled. The paper used for the DVD packaging will be made from 100 percent recycled fibers and is recyclable and compostable.
In addition, manufacturing the recycled tray uses less than 10 percent of the total energy required to make a new Amaray case.

Hulu Opens to the Public with Three Green Video Shows
March 19, 2008
Hulu is new ‘watch TV online’ site that just opened up to the public a few weeks ago. I’ve been catching episodes of The Office, Battlestar Galactica, and Lipstick Jungle (what can I say, I like Brooke Sheilds) and just stumbled on a little cache of green videos there the other day.
The Sundance Channel has licensed a few green series to the site:

Ecoists has short 1:12 clips of different environmental activists and celebrities sharing their ideas for building a green world. The obvious ones are there- Woody Harrelson, Ed Begley Jr, and Daryl Hannah - but people like Ted Danson, Morgan Freeman, Ben Harper, and Moby also chime in.

Greenimation has short animated films that frankly aren’t all that funny or well animated.

Eco Biz has three minute profiles of eco entrepreneurs and companies like Ben & Jerry’s, Terra Pass, Ed Kerschner, and Stoller Vineyard. These are pretty good with a cute host (Alison Stewart) and good production values.
If We Can Build BigDog, We Can Engineer a Green Society
March 19, 2008
Have you seen the video of BigDog, a project developed by Boston Dynamics for the U.S. Military? BigDog is a four legged robotic pack mule that is at once awe inspiring and a little terrifying (cough**Skynet**cough). Pay attention to the BigDog collecting itself after it almost slipped on the ice halfway through.
If we walked on the moon almost 40 years ago, and can make crazy ass robots like this today, how could we not be able to engineer our society so that it doesn’t destroy the environment in which it lives? We’re barely flexing our ability to engineer a clean (notice I didn’t say cleaner) way of living the good, modern life.
The Friday Video Round Up: Will Ferrell, Big Angry Fat Guys, Al Gore, and the Hummer Hybrid
March 14, 2008
It’s Friday; you ain’t got no job… and you ain’t got shit to do. So roll one up (a burrito), sit back, and relax to a few funny ass videos.
• Big Angry Fat Guy
I’m surprised this guy didn’t have a heart attack half way through this. The fat Guy From Boston unloads on Global Warming, Al Gore, and Ben Affleck. While I don’t agree with his angle, I have to give him credit for his angry crazy man passion.
• The Hummer Hybrid
I want a Hummer Hybrid. It’s gets 5MPG on the highway!
• Will Ferrell, aka George Bush, on Global Warming
An oldie, but goodie. Will Ferrell is the man.
• Artfully Shot Macro Video of Popping Pimples
OK, this one isn’t green at all but is a disturbingly good way to end the week. If you’ve ever gotten a secret thrill from popping a pimple, this one is for you. Squeamish readers might want to skip this one.
Enjoy your Friday!
Coal- Cheap. Abundant. Cheap.
March 13, 2008
Our fearless leader Jordan sent me this gem last night after seeing my post about “Clean Coal” yesterday. I like it because it’s close enough to something the Coal Industry would actually put together. I want a Hummer.
Animals vs. Humans: Humanity Gets Pwned
March 11, 2008
It’s no stretch to say that in the ongoing war of Animals vs. Humans, we’re in the firm hold of the lead. Humanity and all our endeavors have killed gazillions of animals, both endangered and tasty (sometimes both!) over the past couple hundred thousand years or so.
Here’s a crazy video showing Animals getting a little payback and attacking the shit out of people. It’s hard to feel too bad for some of the folks getting smacked down in the video, especially the guy branding the horse. There is no blood or guts shown, but some of the folks here are getting MESSED UP by bears, horses, elephants, and rabbits. Viewers with sensitive constitutions should pass this one by.
