Single Stream Recycling: How Does it Work?

by Stephanie Rogers · View Comments

If you have a single recycling receptacle and don’t separate its contents yourself, you may have wondered exactly what happens once the bin is emptied into the recycling truck. RecycleBank, the company that started a unique recycling program that basically pays you to throw less stuff away, has a series of videos explaining just how the single stream recycling process works.

See the rest – including the processes for paper, metal, plastic and glass – on the Explore the Cycle website.

RecycleBank, in case you’re not familiar, gives customers a 35, 64, or 96 gallon recycling container that has a radio frequency identification chip to identify each account. The truck collecting the recyclables scans the chip and then determines the value of the recycled items in ‘reward points’, which can be redeemed through shopping coupons at participating businesses. The program rewards you for recycling. It’s currently available in select cities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York.

If you’re interested in getting RecycleBank service in your city, make a request on the RecycleBank website and they’ll contact you when service becomes available.
