Say Goodbye to the World’s Highest Glacier

The highest glacier in the world is set to disappear forever. The Chacaltaya glacier, which formerly served as Bolivia’s only ski resort, was the world’s highest lift-served ski area and the northernmost ski area in South America. All that remains of the ski area is a 600-foot stretch that is only occasionally covered in snow, and that will be gone within months.

The glacier has melted 6 years earlier than predicted. Check out this AP report:

Now, the region has to face the realities of how Chacaltaya’s loss will affect the water supply. The glaciers that ring the cities in this part of Bolivia have long acted as natural low-maintenance water reservoirs, and if people are to remain living in the area, a new reservoir must be built. Taps have already dried up in the poor urban city of El Alto.

It would appear to be another casualty of global warming, but since “ClimateGate” proved that global warming is a scam, it must just be a figment of our collective imagination, huh?

  • While the world heats up and ice retreats and disappears aorund the world, Rightarded Creationist loons continue to demand that it's a conspiracy by scientists. Or Communists. Or Socialists. Or Fascists. Or Satanists. The stupid rightarded fucks don't exactly know who's behind the conspiracy, actually.
  • This is absolutely crazy. I wrote a piece a couple of weeks ago about shock tactics used by climate change campaigners and NGO's and these pictures demonstrate why they really just aren't necessary. http://wp.me/pGo9D-1k
The cold hard evidence (or not so cold and hard in this case) is more than enough to fundamentally prove that climate change is happening, without the need for Polar bears falling from the sky in Plane Stupid's anti flying campaign for instance. Unfortunately as Bolivia falls into the category of poor and unrecognised international poltical power, the people who have caused this in the developed world (us) will probably not be watching. Having been to Bolivia and La Paz personally I understand how catastrophic the loss of this glacier and their current drought will be and its good to see AP producing some excellent coverage to give it the exposure it deserves. Lets hope it helps to further get the message across - if this was happening to the Alps in Europe people would be up in arms.
