Fluctuating market value has always had great bearing on the recycling business, because the processes are so labor intensive. In some instances, it's simply more cost-effective to reuse; in the current economic climate, UPCYCLING is steadily gaining on recycling. Also, some materials simply cannot be recycled. TerraCycle.net offers the first widely available option to upcycle non-recyclable trash, in a program that actually raises fund for schools, churches and non-profits. The best part is that anybody can sign up!

I think it is important to point out that municipalities are still seeing the benefits of recycling. Even though the MRF's are having problems market the goods and are starting to charge, there is still an economic savings due to the high price of landfilling items. Also, I think this shows people the importance of purchasing goods made from recycled products. I bloged about this "5th R" back in June (while the markets were still strong) http://recycleraccoon.wordpress.com/2008/06/02/r-is-for-rebuy/
