McCain Smacked Down by the Ladies of The View

September 15, 2008 · Print This Article

OK, so this isn’t exactly green, but a McCain presidency would be a disaster for the environment, so we were super excited to see John McCain get slapped down by… The View? I have to say, I’m not a fan of The View at all – Elisabeth Hasslebeck is tough to stomach, and Sherri Shepherd makes frequent crazy-ignorant remarks. But every one of them – even notoriously conservative Elisabeth – had some sharp words for McCain last week when he was a guest on the show.

Check it out (via Salon):

Unsurprisingly, it was Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg who dished out the harshest questions.  This one from Behar was a gem: “There are ads running from your campaign, now we know that those two ads are untrue, they’re lies. And yet, you at the end of it say you approve these messages. Do you really approve them?”  McCain squirmed and managed a weak protest that they weren’t lies, but didn’t have much of an argument.

If only more members of the media would grow a pair of balls (as Amy-Poehler-in-Hillary-Clinton-mode said on SNL over the weekend) and ask McCain and Palin such questions.  As a Salon article accompanying this View clip rightly points out, until those words came out of Joy Behar’s mouth, no one had been brave enough yet to call McCain a liar to his face. Kick ass, ladies!

oh my gawd- he avoids the real answers of questions…what a douche.
Grrrrrrrr, on his Roe Vs Wade comment !!!!!!!

It is horrible that Earthfirst would actually post this video. I read your blog to learn more about recycling and conservation. This video had absolutely nothing to do with saving the Earth and it pollutes your agenda to promote political affiliation. You effectively lose support from those whom you offend, What was your purpose? If it was to offend conservatives or even Libertarians, you succeeded.

As for Leslie, he answered the same way any politician would, to include Obama (the man who believes in legalized murder http://thedirtyonion.com/?p=36 ). Roe vs Wade has even lost the support of the woman that brought it before the supreme court.

@Gideon It’s horrible that you don’t see how destructive a McCain presidency would be, both to our country and the environment at large. If our posting of this video offends you, well- I guess I won’t be losing much sleep over it.

McCain is an addled old liar with no honor. He’d be a terrible President (worse than Bush even) and we’re going to make sure our readers hear it between now and when Obama wins in November.

It just goes to show you that people listen to how a message is given rather than the content of a message. That is the only reason Obama has any support. Obama will tear the very fabric that is America. And you should lose sleep as he will inevitably cause us to lose our country. Hell, even the terrorists want Obama in office…that should tell you something.

  5. Butch Jeffries on September 17th, 2008 1:12 pm

OK enough. I have had it with both sides, because NEITHER side can tell the truth.Obama can’t make up his mind on the war on terror, telling Bush that he did not send enough troops fast enough to Afghanistan. This from the guy who doesn’t want to be in the war in the first place.Flip flop anyone? As for him being president, read Ayn Rand, Robert Ringer, or any Libertarian (think neutral Switzerland) and see that he is a Marxist.Remember, history is doomed to repeat itself because of narrow minds and lack of education. Lets stick to green in this forum, like trying to get CFL’s off the market, because yes,Virginia, there is mercury in them and they will contaminate the planet. Stick to what you know and don’t let your emotions cloud open minds and judgement

  6. Shea Gunther on September 17th, 2008 1:16 pm

Sorry Butch, but that’s a load of crap.

John McCain is a liar who picked a liar for a running mate. He’s running the sleaziest campaign in modern history and he’s abandoned truth and honor. He’d rather lose his soul than lose the election.

Don’t tell us what to cover. We’ll cover what we please and the Presidential campaign is something in our sights. A McCain win would be a disaster of an epic scale. We know green, we know politics, and we’re going to do our best to educate our readers.

John McCain and Sarah Palin are liars- low down dirty liars who would finish the job Bush started of ruining this nation.

  7. Gideon on September 17th, 2008 1:21 pm

Thanks Mr. Jeffries. And now Shea, to move into a realm that should be more your expertise and speed - what do you say about ethanol, Mr. Obama, enviro impact and his honor? C’mon, Obama couldn’t tell the truth if his life depended on it. You as an environmentalist really want to debate politics? Please defend your position against Robert Bryce’s well stated point - http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/sep/04/uselections2008.biofuels

  8. Butch Jeffries on September 17th, 2008 1:28 pm

And yet you do not visit the subject of the CFL. Hmm, I think I smell something rotten.

  9. Butch Jeffries on September 17th, 2008 1:44 pm

The silence is defening, I hope that you are working on rebuting my post on CFl’s. Let me stear you in the direction of the industry source. Look at Electrical Contractor magazine, that should give all you suedo environmentalist a good wake up call. It sucks being on the wrong side of the issue when you think you aren’t.

  10. Shea Gunther on September 17th, 2008 8:28 pm

Butch, I don’t live and die for your comments.

    But since you’re begging for a response…

Yeah, there’s a small amount of mercury in CFL bulbs. As long as you don’t do something stupid like lick up a broken CFL bulb you should be ok.

If you compare the entire life cycle of a CFL bulb vs. a standard incandescent you see that the old fashion bulb contributes way more mercury to the environment due to the mercury released when coal is burned.

There are legitimate concerns with properly disposing of CFL bulbs, but I often find that the issue is usually brought up by ignorant screeching right wing blowhards trying to waste our time. it’s like Offshore Drilling, a non-issue that gets the right all hot and bothered in thinking they’ve “got” us on something.

It’s lame, weak, and indicative of your general inability to actually lead this country in the right direction. Your side has run things for the past 8 years and managed to nearly ruin this country while destroying the grand ol’ party. Enjoy the next 16 years of living on the margins. It’s going to be a blue November.

(And dude, spell check is your friend).

  11. Shea Gunther on September 17th, 2008 8:31 pm

@Gideon If you defend your incredible level of naiveté for thinking John McCain would do anything other than finish the job that Bush has started in destroying our great nation, I’ll defend my position against your linked-to non-issue. Why do you hate America so much?

  12. greenspeechie on September 18th, 2008 7:40 am

Look, Barack Obama has problems with his plans, too. They’re just smaller problems than McCain’s. More oil won’t get us very far at all, and don’t even get me started on McCain’s choice of running mate, the woman who can’t even decide what she thinks about global warming and doesn’t consider the polar bear endangered. (Or at least she didn’t–she changes her mind about something every thirty minutes or so, so it’s sometimes hard to tell what her opinions are.)

And spend a little bit of time on Snopes and you’ll realize that not everything you hear about Obama is true.

  13. Gideon on September 18th, 2008 8:24 am

Shea- if you will even publish this comment (I see you have resorted to giving up because you are fighting an argument you can’t win) then please tell me why your beloved Democrats are flip flopping? I suppose you will now be for drilling won’t you? Hehehe…it is even supported by your dear Ms. Pelosi.
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/09/17/AR2008091703425.html?hpid=topnews

Greenspeechie - Thank you for your insight. I love arguments that appear to be based on fact rather than opinion and hate speech like Shea’s. As for Obama, I did spend my time on Snopes. That is why I don’t bring up points like him being a muslim or him removing the flag from the tail of his airplane. Although there is evidence leading that direction, the argument is not strong enough for me. Obama being liked as the candidate of choice and having support thrown his way by terrorists is true. The fact that Islamic groups are publicly asking the terrorists to quiet themselves is also true. And the fact that Barack was raised in a home where the predominant belief is Marxist is also true.

  14. Gideon on September 18th, 2008 8:56 am

Shea - As to your non-response on CFLs. For your correct information, because apparently your sources get it wrong, LED (light emitting diodes) lighting uses 1/10 of the energy that CFLs do. And no, the consequences behind CFLs go much deeper than if you are stupid enough to lick a broken one. From Snopes”
Like batteries, used CFLs need to be disposed at a toxic waste depot rather than tossed out with the ordinary household trash. Because mercury is cumulative, this poisonous element would add up if all the spent bulbs went into a landfill. Instead, the mercury in dead bulbs is reclaimed at such depots and recycled.”
Seriously, where do you get your information.

  15. Roy on September 18th, 2008 10:35 am

Whoa. What Gideon lacks in eloquence, he (or she) makes up for in accuracy. Incandescent < CFL < LED and CFLs have the most poison of the three. Mercury is bad stuff. If you read about how to dispose of a broken CFL, it’s kinda scary (use tape to pick up any powder, don’t touch it or breath near it, and let the area air out for at least a few hours!?!)

But in the end, LEDs’ only drawback is current cost. Other than that, they’re 10 gallons of kick-ass in a 5 gallon jug.

  16. Roy on September 19th, 2008 12:46 am

back to the video, though, “Judeo-Christian values were the foundation of the video” was as far as I could watch.

He must have been lying when he said that he had read the writings of the founding fathers… Adams and Jefferson were particularly clear on the topic of religion.

Oh, and Abraham Lincoln wasn’t a founding father. Historically important, sure, but about a hundred years later.

  17. Roy on September 19th, 2008 12:49 am

And as someone who liked McCain before 2008, I must say that John Kerry did an excellent job of summing up why I use the past tense in his speech at the NDC. Why couldn’t he be that well-spoken in ‘04?

  18. John Bowes on September 21st, 2008 10:38 pm

Sheeshh….I signed on to get some great recycling tips and you guys actually believe the VIEW is a credible source to use to “smack down” John McCain? What next, Whoopi Goldberg as a Foreign Policy Advisor? Stick with EARTH FIRST….out of here….
