It’s Cold Out – Global Warming Must be a Scam!

“Global warming my ass! It’s freezing! Al Gore sure is taking you people for a ride!” I’ve heard comments along these lines for months now, ever since normal late fall/early winter temperatures set in. Check the comments on any local news story about a snowstorm, and you’ll find at least a handful of people who believe that because it’s snowing during winter in the Northern Hemisphere, global warming can’t possibly be real.
Max Gladwell has explained the fallacy of this logic:
The infamous Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma recently declared victory over the global warming conspiracy based on the observation that “his opponents won’t say global warming any more” and instead prefer “climate change”. His argument for victory is basically grounded in semantics coupled with the drop in global warming headlines and the fact that he’s giving this interview during the winter, when it happens to be cold. (He also refers to dubious science.)
The reality is that climate change more accurately describes the various phenomena caused by global warming. The latter simply refers to the increase in global temperature as a result of CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases. We’re therefore seeing more droughts, floods, and a greater rate of anomalous weather events i.e. climate change. The effect of a warmer atmosphere might, in fact, cause more snow and colder temperatures in some areas with devastating, long-term effects. We don’t know precisely. This is uncharted territory for the planet (in terms of recorded CO2 concentrations) and mankind. Has the climate changed in the past? Yes. At this rapid pace without a reasonable explanation? No.
I couldn’t have said it better myself. No doubt, the “if the world is warming, why is it so cold out” meme will continue to proliferate – after all, these are the same kinds of people who continue to forward ‘Obama is a Muslim’ chain emails. If dying forests, the collapse of Antarctic ice shelves, ocean acidification, trillions of tons of ice loss in 5 years and other alarming signs of global warming won’t convince them, nothing will until the day they personally experience the catastrophic effects themselves.

I was on a backcountry trip to Colorado, Boulder had heated up to almost 80 degrees in January. Boulder, being a savvy town when it comes to making sense of science– the sandwich shop buzz was extreme weather, but get up into the mountains with the out-of-towners on the Texas Special, everyone was chuckling about how great Global Warming is.
It has dual outcomes and equally stupid responses. At any rate, be it the weather man pasting up an unseasonable sunshine or being pounded by three days of epic blizzard, the middle Americans seem to think it’s pretty funny and just part of pop culture, and that like the internet, Al Gore invented it.
I’m sure those people out there who are trying to say that climate change is a scam have a good explanation as to why the oceans now have so many dead zones, why the forests in the west are dying so much faster, why storms are getting worse in coastal areas, why Europe and other countries are dealing with record high temperatures and droughts, etc. I would love to know how they explain everything else away. Would be good for a laugh if nothing else.
The fact is our actions have consequences and those consequences are now coming back to bit all of humanity and the world in the butt. We either wise up and make the needed changes to preserve the one planet we have, or like the jokers who disclaim the whole thing, sit back and deny and scratch our heads when things get worse. Hindsight is 20/20, foresight is priceless. Show our only means of survival some respect and start doing the right thing by preserving and caring for the planet.

I’m not denying global climate change – but global warming? What a bunk. 20 years ago it was global cooling. Today, it’s global cooling again. In between, warming. What all you folks need to understand is that all the BS is just to manipulate you to support one or the other, while the polluting MFers continue to pollute, causing CLIMATE CHANGE which can go either way – and now they want to trade “carbon credits”. What a crock! Company A pollutes Community A, but “trades carbon credits” with Company B who isn’t polluting Community B (now) and Company A purchases their credits. Comuunity A still suffers POLLUTION! But the Companies, neither A nor B lose any money nor are they responsible for any cleanup caused by their pollution.
Will you all please, finally, turn your brains back on and get a clue? Do not believe the lies of your government (I’m here to help) or any major corporation (granted the rights of an individual without the accountability many, many years ago). They don’t give a crap about you – only you can fix it!!!
The government and the huge corporations see you as slaves, and you all appear to be accepting this demeaning position. They don’t event provide housing!!!
