How to Stop Wasteful Phone Book Deliveries
June 10, 2008 · Print This Article
Every year, at least once, you open your front door to find one – or possibly even two or three – phone books piled in a heap on your doorstep, driveway or lawn. Competing phone book companies put out various versions of their tomes, giving you yellow books, white books, county books and city books. And, when’s the last time you even used a phone book? Aren’t we all just looking things up on the internet by now?
If you’re sick of wasteful phone book deliveries, you can put them to a stop. Here’s how, from Simply Thrifty:
If you want to stop receiving phone books call:
* ATT/ Yellow Pages: 1-800-479-2977
* Verizon: 800-555-4833, press 4, then 5, then 2
* DEX: 1-877-243-8339, press 2
* Yellow Book: 1-800-929-3556, press 2
You can also opt out of phone book deliveries at www.yellowpagesgoesgreen.org.

One small thing to remember, if your internet goes out then a “hard copy” can save your butt. So make sure to write down a couple of emergency numbers (phone company, power company, ISP, favorite take out restaurant, etc.) before you recycle your phone book.
I use to live in a high rise building and a huge truck would drop off hundreds, upon hundreds of phone books that no one picked up or used. they would sit there for a couple weeks and than you would see them in the dumpster. so sad.
I once delivered phone books for some extra cash. I earned pennies per delivery. People didn’t exactly welcome me. They already had a ton of books from other companies. One guy actually flung the book back at me into the street.
So why do these companies keep pushing so many books when few people want them and already have them from a variety of sources? I think it’s the advertising revenue, and if they can “boost” their circulation they can charge more for ads. That’s just my guess.
Oh, I should add these weren’t phone books with residential numbers. They were yellow pages.
Consumers can “opt out” of receiving telephone books at http://www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org. We will contact the publishers and inform them to stop delivering books. This is a free service for consumers. http://www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is working with state and local governments on ordinances concerning the delivery of unsolicited telephone books. http://www.YellowPagesGoesGreen.org is not against the telephone books but against the delivery of 4 to 5 pounds of paper on people’s door step 5 to 6 times per year and being told it is our responsibility to recycle something we did not ask for. If we need a book we will call. Otherwise I “opt out” from receiving it.
In addition to opting out of your phonebook you can also opt ouf of delivery of your free local newspaper that pile up in the driveway. http://www.stopmylocalpaper.org

Thanks for the post.
You can also sign do not mail petition (like Do Not Call National Petition)
I did some search online and this is the best resource so far available online (correct me if I am wrong). I have done this 5 months ago and my mailbox is literally empty ( I have paperless billing and also opted out from various mail lists) I check my mail twice a month now. It is beautiful.
I even took the letter from samples provided and wrote it to a local Chinese restaurant that keeps putting fliers in my door. They stopped too in the whole subdivision.

I even opted out from the yellow book. What do I need it for, since the internet is right here.
