Earthwatch Institute is an international non-profit organization that engages people worldwide in scientific field research and education to promote the understanding and action necessary for a sustainable environment. Field research grant awards are derived from funds contributed by Earthwatch members who serve as volunteer participants on research projects.

Position Overview:

The Youth and Family Program Manager (YFPM) is responsible for overseeing the implementation and administration of a portfolio of field-based research projects.  The YFPM is responsible for a portfolio of research projects serving families and high-school students and is the primary liaison between Earthwatch Institute and the scientists (Principal Investigators) who lead Earthwatch research projects.  The YFPM will ensure the delivery of a high-quality field research experience for team members and Principal Investigators (PIs) in accordance with Earthwatch policies, procedures, and best practices.

This is a part-time position, approximately 3 days/week.

Responsibilities:

The YFPM is responsible for overseeing the following aspects of project management for the segment of the EW program serving youth and families:

  • risk management
  • health, safety, and logistics
  • emergency response planning
  • annual contract and budget negotiation
  • project evaluation
  • grant disbursement
  • contract renewal
  • editing EW Project Briefings
  • participating as a member of the EW Crisis Management Team, including the Duty Officer Roster
  • hiring, management, and training of EW Teen and Family Team Facilitators
  • managing relationships with EW PIs and partner organizations
  • training PIs and Field Staff
  • conduct field assessments to EW projects on an as-needed basis

The YFPM is a member of the Field Management team.   This person will collaborate with the EW Engagement Department on the educational content of teams, and with the EW Research and Volunteer Outreach Departments to develop new projects for the Youth and Family program.

Qualifications:

  • Background of field leadership experience with youth and/or families in outdoor/experiential education settings
  • 5+ years work experience supervising youth programs
  • International travel leadership experience and remote field experience preferred
  • Proven experience managing field incidents
  • Strong budgetary skills and proficient in using MS Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Previous experience developing training sessions for experiential educators/trip leaders
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team in a collegial setting
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Highly organized, with exceptional project and time management skills
  • Ability to think strategically, and solve problems creatively
  • Willingness to travel 2-4 weeks per year
  • Wilderness first aid certification preferred, advanced wilderness medical certification a plus
  • Knowledge of language/languages other than English is a plus

Compensation: Salary range $23,700- $25,000 commensurate with experience for 3 days/week salaried position. Good benefits package.
