
Youth education programs in the White Mountains!
The Appalachian Mountain Club’s environmental education program, A Mountain Classroom, is designed to introduce students to the natural world through field-oriented curriculum. As 1 of 2 school program coordinators, this A Mountain Classroom Program Coordinator manages the day to day organizational and educational aspects of the AMC’s residential school program.
Position Overview:
SPRING and FALL “A Mountain Classroom” Environmental Education Instructors Early April- Mid June and/or Late August- Late October
A Mountain Classroom Environmental Education Instructors share their knowledge and love of the outdoors with youth through our hiking-based education program. A Mountain Classroom serves 5th-12th grade public, private, and home-schooled groups. Students participate in 1-5 day experiential programs based at Pinkham Notch, The Highland Center, Cardigan Lodge, the AMC’s backcountry huts, and in local schools and communities. Academic lessons on forest and watershed ecology, map and compass, geology, meteorology, outdoor skills, and teambuilding are integrated throughout a hiking-based program.
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include: field staff training, scheduling and supervision; communicating with teachers on program details; logistical planning and implementation; risk management procedure implementation, curriculum design; teaching materials and gear management. Duties are divided approximately 20% in the field, including teaching programs, and 80% administration.
This is a full time, year-round position, with programs running for much of the school year. This position also plays a vital logistics support and staff supervision and training role for the Teen Wilderness Adventures program, a multi-element summer wilderness program with courses running from 5 – 23 days in duration. The A Mountain Classroom Program Coordinator may instruct summer wilderness courses.
Qualifications:
Work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends. Perform on-call duties for North Country youth. Capable of safely traveling alone in the backcountry long distances during all seasons and weather conditions. Must be able to carry up to 40+ pounds of equipment backpacking with ease.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental education or related field. 2-3 years previous experience as an environmental educator. Current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certifications. Wilderness First Responder preferred. Administrative and supervisory experience preferred. Excellent organizational and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively.
