Great Green Job of the Week: IT Coordinator at the Mount Washington Observatory

The Mount Washington Observatory is seeking an Information Technology Coordinator in North Conway, New Hampshire. The Mount Washington Observatory is a private, non-profit scientific and educational institution organized under the laws of the state of New Hampshire. Its mission is to advance understanding of the natural systems that create the Earth’s weather and climate, by maintaining its mountaintop weather station, conducting research and educational programs and interpreting the heritage of the Mount Washington region.

The Information Technology Coordinator (IT) facilitates the Observatory’s use of computer hardware, software, networks (both cabled and wireless), and related technology to achieve cost-effective solutions. The IT Coordinator plans and implements Observatory projects independently or in cooperation with consultants, vendors, and appropriate Observatory staff. He or she also maintains existing systems by monitoring them, responding to problems, and performing preventive maintenance. The IT Coordinator fulfills these objectives by researching technologies, understanding project goals, making recommendations, interacting with vendors, and cooperating with other IT staff and interns appropriately.

Job duties include:

  • Plan, recommend, and implement technology projects
  • Provide budget and purchasing recommendations
  • Monitor systems, respond to emergencies, and preempt problems
  • Maintain MWO’s remote weather stations and web cam network
  • Install and maintain hardware and software, including server and desktop computers, databases, Windows, Linux, network routers and switches, cabling, and other communications equipment in both an office environment and in the field at remote sites
