The only sustainable housing solution is to build your own home out of local natural materials, using passive solar design strategies, and rainwater harvesting systems. Once the materials are harvested you can make sure they are replaced.

The art of facilitating beneficial relationships between living organisms and natural systems in the local environment IS the solution. LEED Platinum????

The issue raised about the homeless is a good one so i was pleased to see this ast the Earthship site-well worth a look.

The Earthship Biotecture crew provided disaster relief to Indian locals directly after the 2004 tsunami by teaching citizens how to construct homes that would provide water, energy, and food. The team continues to invent the most cutting edge innovations in green building for disaster relief, extreme climactic conditions, and everyday residential applications. As we examine the climatic and ecological uncertainty of our immediate future, we can thank our lucky stars that the earthship has finally landed.

Great homes!! Even though some of them look as though they're there only for show.

But some of them look quite practical and blend beautifully into the background.

Ideas for the future... hopefully!

Seriously though, as a fan of both great architecture and green homes this was an good read.

@fisch

Lighten up. I'm sure the author understands the need for mass need for green housing, but it's still an interesting article with some good ideas for anybody wanting to start a green project of their own.

all very quaint, cute and interesting. However, hardly worth attention when 6+ billion people need housing. Better to look to LEED platinum ideas that are growing every day, such as one might find in Greensburg GreenTown, for example. Numerous other locations world wide making efforts to build eco friendly housing that is amenable to the scale needed world-wide.
